Use of Hazop for risk management is the topic of the last day of the 25th Cobrasemt

“Hazop process risk tools and others for continuous improvement” was one of the themes on the final day of the 25th Cobrasemt (Brazilian Congress of Safety and Occupational Medicine). The objective was to raise awareness among industry professionals and company managers about the importance of understanding and knowing how to use operational risk management tools in industry, especially in those that perform high-risk activities.

“Many companies deal with the risk of tank overflow, leaks, and explosions. It is necessary to know all these risks because the standard requires using Hazop [Hazard and Operability Study] in these cases. When we do not perform proper mapping, these accidents happen that we always see in the news, highlighted Marcelo de Paula, director of Apaest (São Paulo Association of Safety Engineering Professionals).

HAZOP is a qualitative methodology to identify process-related risks. The tool considers events that can affect people, equipment, the environment, and other elements of a company.

De Paula added that occupational safety engineers must interact with occupational safety technicians, the maintenance department, and professionals within the industry in order to understand all aspects of the operation so they can develop proper mapping. “The focus is to protect material resources and, fundamentally, to protect the worker.”

Edson Campinho, director of Apaest and Petrobras safety technician, stated that companies that do not invest in risk management and continuous improvement are “doomed to failure.” He stressed the importance of choosing methodologies and techniques that are efficient and, above all, that everyone involved can understand.

“Interpreting information that can trigger events, such as explosions that could affect the entire community, is the everyday reality of our work. Therefore, you need to have access to information as easily as you breathe. There are many tools, but make sure everyone understands the data efficiently,” he reinforced.

Held in parallel with the 24th Fisp – International Safety and Protection Fair and the 15th Fire Show – International Fire Fair, the 25th Cobrasemt brought knowledge to various areas of occupational safety and health management. The event took place at São Paulo Expo from October 22nd to 24th.

Fire under control: technologies for fire protection

The market features innovations that take protection and rescue operations to a new level. METROMINAS, for example, showcased Honeywell's Safety Suite at Fire Show 2024, a real-time monitoring system that operates as a digital guardian in challenging sectors such as oil and gas and mining. With this advanced technology, companies can identify risk patterns and analyze safety incidents with detailed reports.

Another highlight is the BrandSchutz system, which monitors safety devices, such as smoke detectors and pumping systems, all in real time. This solution ensures rapid responses to incidents, coordinates evacuations, and maintains direct communication with emergency teams, promoting maximum protection in critical situations. The integration of technology with safety is essential for safer and more efficient environments.

Furthermore, Fire protection  advocates and introduces the use of virtual reality for emergency training, allowing users to practice evacuation and fire-fighting procedures in realistic scenarios with real-time feedback. Offering cloud solutions, the company also brings centralized and accessible management from anywhere for alarm and fire system monitoring, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

With these innovations, fire safety becomes not only more effective, but also more accessible, ensuring that everyone can work and live in protected and safe environments.

Sustainability is one of the themes of the ABNT CB-32 Congress

Innovation aligned with sustainability was one of the topics on the final day of the ABNT CB-32 Congress. Lívio Giosa, general coordinator of the ADVB (Association of Sales and Marketing Directors of Brazil) Institute for Socio-Environmental Responsibility, opened the lecture by mentioning the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” (2006), which addresses climate change from Al Gore's perspective.

“Anyone who watches the film gets scared because everything that was predicted to happen between 2045 and 2050 is happening right now. That is why sustainability has to be on the agenda in politics, in companies, and in our homes. We need to take action now,” he stated.

According to Giosa, society is at a turning point from the capitalist economy to the green economy, and from a world focused on the economy to a low-carbon economy. “This new reality requires a series of factors, such as new information, new knowledge, and new job offers. This is irreversible, so you need to understand how this is affecting your company,” he said.

The speaker mentioned the advancement of the ESG agenda (an acronym for environmental, social, and governance best practices) in companies as a way to collaborate with business sustainability and longevity. In this sense, a change in attitude and behavior, beyond tree planting, must be priority actions.

Arguing that every individual can do something innovative for sustainability, Giosa recalled the case of Kenya, which decreed a holiday in 2023 so that every inhabitant could plant at least one tree. The goal is for 15 billion seedlings to be planted in the country in 10 years.

The ABNT CB-32 Congress was held from October 22 to 24 during the 24th Fisp - International Safety Fair, at the São Paulo Expo.
