Startup launches smart mask that translates speech into 9 languages

The Japanese company Donut Robotics has announced the launch of a new smart mask designed to protect users from potential respiratory contamination while offering technological capabilities such as simultaneous translation. The “C-Mask” is able to capture the user's speech, turn it into text, and immediately translate it. The translated text can then be projected onto a screen for the other person to read.

The project, which is open for crowdfunding on the Fundinno platform, has already raised approximately US$$ 260,000. The information comes from Reuters.

The C-Mask can translate Japanese into eight other languages: English, Chinese, French, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. In addition, the device is capable of amplifying the user's voice through built-in speakers, and even recording conversations and making phone calls.

This is because the C-Mask offers remote connectivity to other devices. Thus, it is able to provide a range of technological features, in addition to protecting the user against the spread of viruses, such as COVID-19.

“We’ve worked hard for years to develop a robot, and we’ve used this technology to create a product that addresses the way the coronavirus has transformed society,” said Taisuke Ono, CEO of Donut Robotics. It is estimated that about 5,000 units will be on sale in Japan by September, at an expected price of US$37 per unit.
