Milliken do Brasil has introduced a fabric production technology that makes it simpler and more practical to incorporate antimicrobial protection into medical apparel and hospital textiles. The antimicrobial technology is activated by bleach and harnesses the power of chlorine-based products to kill 99.9%* of bacteria and viruses. The fabric uses advanced engineering that binds chlorine to the fibers, creating an additional layer of active defense against accidental microbial exposure.
The activation of the garment is quite simple for the user. When the garment is washed with a chlorine-based bleach at certain concentrations predetermined in the washing instructions, the technology causes the chlorine molecule to adhere to the fabric surface. When the garment comes into contact with viruses or bacteria, this encapsulated chlorine molecule is released to kill them. To “recharge” this activation after use, simply wash the fabric again with bleach at the concentrations provided in the washing instructions. This protection lasts approximately 75 industrial washes. And the disinfecting effects of the bleach on the fabric extend for up to 12 weeks after the washing cycle is completed, when following the use, washing, and care instructions provided by Milliken.
The fabric with this technology is primarily intended for healthcare professionals and can be used to make hospital curtains, masks, and medical coats.
Statistics show that 60% of medical garments, such as lab coats, for example, are contaminated with potentially infectious bacteria, and 92% of privacy curtains become contaminated within a week after washing. The fabric featuring Milliken’s technology is designed to combat these bacteria and viruses, which typically cause opportunistic infections.
