MG firefighters get new high-visibility uniforms

uniform Gray said goodbye for good to Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais. Instead, the colorful uniforms orange now they are mandatory for all military personnel. The change, which previously underwent testing, promises high visibility and more safety for what is a high-risk profession.

The first to use the new color uniforms were the military personnel of the Environmental Emergencies and Disaster Response Battalion (Bemad). Afterward, a commission was created responsible for developing the new uniform.

Based on this, CBMMG published Resolution 806 on August 27, 2018, establishing the new operational uniform standard. At that time, the corporation set a deadline from December 2018 to June 29, 2020, for the entire troop to comply and obtain their uniforms.

“We analyzed and saw that we needed more criteria for security. Several times at major events, in nighttime incidents, on highways, it wasn't as easy to recognize the firefighter, and we need to be easily spotted by the public, says Captain Thaise Rodrigues Rocha.

Quality standard

According to the Fire Department, the new uniform meets international quality standards and, above all, the operational functionality.
“The commission was created to analyze how international standards and those in other states were being applied in order to propose modernization. It was a concern of ours,” said Captain Thaise. “This new uniform it is more resistant for the nature of the profession, which is truly demanding.”
In addition to the visual identity, the corporation also argues that the new attire meets the comfort of the professional. “It has elbow reinforcement and knee pads. The more comfortable the professional is, the better care they can provide to the victim,” the firefighter adds.

Main features

The Fire Department highlights three aspects that differentiate and enhance the new uniform:

  1. Technologyelbow reinforcement, retroreflective strips, removable knee pads, wide sleeve adjusters, and bellows pocket (cargo pocket);
  2. Securityzipper closure, knee pad adjusters, elastic waistband, reinforced seams on the pants, no back pockets;
  3. Identityaccording to ABNT NBR 15292/2013 standard, high-visibility safety clothing, fluorescent ripstop fabric, and consolidation of the institutional image.

Flashy color

Search and rescue activities in dense forests, landslide sites, and fires are other examples of military operations where the importance of easily identifying firefighters is noticeable.

At the beginning of the change, what may have seemed strange due to the flashy color of the uniform has gained new meanings over the last month with a campaign by the Corporation on social media. Several military personnel published photos bidding farewell to the old uniform and welcoming the color orange.

“All change generates a bit of resistance, mainly because we get attached, but as they start using it, they understand why,” said Captain Thaise. “It’s better for us to know that we are working safely, and little by little everyone gets used to it.”
