Fire Protection and Combat generates around 3 billion per year in Brazil

Regulation is still inefficient

São Paulo – According to an estimate by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global product safety company with a strong presence in Brazil, the fire protection industry generates around 3 billion reais annually in the country. With its sights set on this segment, UL will host a group of Chinese and Indian clients—who are certified by the company in their respective markets and are interested in exporting to Brazil—until October 7 at its pavilion at FISP (International Safety and Protection Fair) – FIRE SHOW (International Fire Fair).

The fire protection industry has numerous items such as sprinklers, fire detection, alarm and suppression control panels (and their accessories), fire doors, foam-generating liquids, C-PVC pipes and fittings, pumps, hydrants, emergency lighting and signage, fire trucks, among others. However, only a few products are regulated by INMETRO, such as Hoses, Fire Extinguishers, Fire Extinguishing Powder, and Pressure Indicators for fire extinguishers.

According to Vladson Athayde, manager of UL's Fire Protection and Suppression unit for Latin America, the lack of stricter standards, combined with the absence of regulations on the manufacturing, importation, commercialization, and installation of products related to fire suppression, protection, and detection, favors the presence of uncertified products in the market. An example is alarm control panels and sprinklers, which most of the time do not perform as expected in an emergency.

“We have been working in partnership with the authorities with the goal of clarifying best practices that could reduce fires and save lives. Our customers, experienced suppliers in mature markets, have expertise and UL certification for their products. We believe this is an excellent opportunity to generate good business at this event,” concludes Athayde.
