Raul Casanova, executive director of ANIMASEG, talks about the occupational health and safety market and expectations for FISP 2016

Mon – 08/10/2016

The executive director of the National Association of the Work Safety and Protection Equipment Industry (ANIMASEG) talks about the market overview and expectations for the 21st edition of FISP | International Safety and Protection Fair. Featuring the most complete business platform for occupational safety and health, the event takes place from October 5 to 7, 2016, at the São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo, gathering 700 exhibitors and 50,000 industry professionals.

“The country has an economically active population of more than 100 million workers and, therefore, is well-positioned, once Brazilian growth resumes, to grow at rates higher than the other sectors of the economy. The PPE sector in Brazil has an annual turnover of 4.5 billion reais, the potential to double this turnover in a few years, and access to all the technology needed to adequately protect our workers, comments the executive.

How is the worker safety and protection equipment industry doing today?

The PPE industry is heavily dependent on the country's economic situation and is directly hit by rising unemployment and companies' financial constraints.

A recent survey by Animaseg found an average decline of 13% in revenue in 2015 compared to 2014. However, there are already signs of improvement in companies’ expectations, as they anticipate 4% growth in 2016 compared with 2015.

2- What are the alternatives to the current economic situation? Certainly, the crisis has noticeably hindered companies in the sector, but like any difficult moment, it is also a time to explore new opportunities; companies in the sector have expanded their range of clients, which in the long run can bring benefits to the entire sector.

3- In its 21st edition, FISP has become a major event in the segment. What is its importance for professionals in the sector?

It is an opportunity for professionals to discover new products and new suppliers for the products they already use, as FISP has become the meeting point for safety professionals in Brazil, a mandatory event for anyone in the occupational health and safety sector.

4- What will be the new features that visitors will be able to check out, among product launches, new technologies, and services?

All Brazilian and foreign companies will bring their new products to FISP, aiming to meet the demands of our market at all levels.

5- Besides the exhibition area, what else will the visitor find at the event.

A new feature that we believe will be a differential at the event will be the participation of the Jorge Duprat Figueiredo Foundation for Occupational Safety and Medicine (Fundacentro), linked to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, celebrating its 50th anniversary with an interactive participation at FISP.

6- In your analysis, what are the prospects for the sector?

The PPE sector in Brazil had been growing at a rate of 9 to 10% per year, and despite the crisis in the Brazilian economy and its impact on the sector, the country still has a working-age population of over 100 million workers and, therefore, has everything it needs to—once Brazil’s economy resumes growth—grow at rates higher than those of other sectors of the economy.

7- Sector numbers

Even with the decline of the Brazilian economy, we are an industry with a revenue of 4.5 billion reais per year and the potential to double this revenue in a few years. We have local companies, multinationals, and importers in our market, as well as access to all the technology needed to adequately protect our workers. We believe that the country should invest more in education, aiming to improve awareness that prevention is always the best and lowest-cost path.
