Occupational Health and Safety sector has great potential for growth in the country

International Security and Protection Trade Fair, taking place from October 3 to 5 at São Paulo Expo, will showcase advancements and new technologies for the sector

São Paulo, July 2018 – After three consecutive years of declines, revenue in Brazil’s personal protective equipment industry stabilized in 2017 and is projected to grow by 3% this year, according to projections by Animaseg (National Association of the Occupational Safety and Protection Equipment Industry). According to a survey by the association, this segment generates more than R$ 4 billion annually.

Covered by specific rules and legislation, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) still has a long way to go in the country. There are more than 700,000 workplace accidents per year, generating costs that reach several tens of billions of reais. A study conducted by Fundacentro, an agency of the Ministry of Labor, indicates that between 2012 and 2016 these accidents caused 13.3 thousand deaths.

Given this scenario, Cipa Fiera Milano is promoting between October 3 and 5 of this year the 22nd edition of FISP – International Fair of Safety and Protection. The event is organized by Abraseg (Brazilian Association of Distributors and Importers of Occupational Safety and Protection Equipment and Products), Animaseg, and Sindiseg (Union of the Safety Material Industry). The event takes place simultaneously with 13th Fire Show – International Fire Fair. Together, the trade fairs are expected to attract an audience of over 50,000 visitors and 700 exhibiting companies.

According to Rimantas Sipas, director of Fiera Cipa Milano, the objective is to promote professional qualification and training through lectures and courses taught by experts from various fields during the OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) Professional Qualification Show, which aims to disseminate the culture of accident prevention with current approaches of greater interest and professional scope through courses and seminars. The Techshow is also held, featuring free lectures given by exhibitors, which promote the exchange of information and technologies.

Professional qualification

During FISP, seven will be held Professional Qualification Courses in OHS and eSocial Technical Seminar: Legal Aspects, Planning, and Information Structuring in OHS. These activities play a role in disseminating new regulations, legislation, study results, and technologies developed in the field in recent years, bringing up-to-date information to technicians working in the market. The events are aimed at professionals in the occupational health and safety sector, such as firefighters, managers, engineers, occupational physicians, risk inspectors, HR personnel, internal accident prevention committee (CIPA) members, business owners, purchasers, and technicians.

Thus, professionals in the field will be able to participate in the courses of Drafting and articulation of labor and social security documents to comply with eSocialPPRA, PCMSO, ASO, insalubrity/hazard report, LTCAT and PPP; Expert evidence: insalubrity and hazard expert examinations – technical and legal aspects; NR 35 – work at height and recent changes, among others. The Technical Seminar, in turn, will bring to debate topics such as “The Effects of the New Legislation on Brazilian Companies”; “Infrastructure Necessary to Implement eSocial”; “The Importance of Occupational Health and Safety Process Management to Comply with eSocial (SESI Viva+)”; “Ergonomics in Times of Labor Reform and eSocial”; and “OSH Document Organization to Comply with eSocial.”.

FISP is the second largest global event dedicated to the occupational health and safety sector, trailing only behind A+A, the German trade fair for the industry.

Raul Casanova, executive director of Animaseg, points out that the occupational safety and health (OSH) sector has great growth potential in Brazil. “We estimate that today there are 45% workers in the informal economy, 15% statutory workers and civil servants, and 40% workers in the formal economy. Thus, we estimate that there are at least 50% workers who are still underserved, and therefore, even though we are impacted by the country’s economy in the short term, there is still enormous room for growth.”
