The Military Fire Department of Pará, through the Directorate of Education and Instruction (DEI), with the support of the Directorate of Technical Services (DST) and the Military Firefighter Academy (ABM), has started the Technical Analysis and Inspection Course – CAVT/2020, which has been adapted to the distance learning modality.
This is the first time the corporation is conducting a technical-level course in this format. The objective of the course is to prepare and qualify Military Firefighter Officers, Officer Candidates, and Enlisted Personnel to perform technical activity services, based on the current technical standards of the Corporation, as well as to introduce students to the basis of specific technical knowledge of Fire and Emergency Safety in proactive risk mitigation actions; qualify students to perform Analysis of Fire and Emergency Safety Projects for buildings; and qualify students to conduct Inspections of Fire and Emergency Safety Systems in buildings and Risk Areas.
At the beginning of March, the opening class of CAVT/20 was held, but due to decrees issued by the State Government and the City Hall of Belém because of the new coronavirus pandemic, in-person classes were suspended. However, last Thursday (21), the course was resumed, adapted to Distance Learning (EAD) through the “Google Classroom” and “Hangouts” platforms.
This adaptation introduced new educational initiatives, in addition to the challenge of continuing to provide students with a quality education amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During the week, students will be monitored through daily activities via a digital platform and will attend live classes every Thursday and Friday morning from 8:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and in the afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 4:10 p.m. There are 5 courses taught by CBMPA officers, with the goal of providing 50% of live instruction per course. In total, there are 48 students, including 44 firefighters (both officers and enlisted personnel) and 4 members of the armed forces.
According to Captain Marcelo Ribeiro, supervisor of the course, it was a challenge to be able to continue the studies, adapted to a distance learning format. “The corporation did not yet have this format as a standard in any course, we had to do research for adaptation and for it to be successful, given that the course is of great importance to the corporation,” he explains.
With this new format, it was possible to admit more military personnel than foreseen in the in-person class, including military personnel stationed in the interior of the State. Major Pablo Oliveira, the course coordinator, informed that the workload is extensive. “There are 180 hours of theory, plus 40 hours of internship, adapted to the virtual format. It is a challenge to pass on this workload, due to the technical level of the subjects covered. The learning curve is long; this is one of the challenges to overcome.”.
The expected completion date of the course is in July.
