Opening ceremony of Fisp and Fire Show gathers main security sector entities in Brazil

The organization expects more than 50,000 people to attend the fairs over the three days of the event.

The 24th edition of Fisp, the International Fair of Safety and Protection, and the 15th Fire Show, International Fire Fair, began on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 22, at the São Paulo Expo, in the southern zone of São Paulo. This promises to be the largest edition of the event, recognized as the most comprehensive in the areas of occupational health and safety, and fire prevention and fighting in Latin America. For this year, the numbers are impressive: 448 exhibitors, representing more than 700 brands. By the eve of the event, 38,000 people from 41 countries had already registered to visit the fairs. The expectation is to welcome 50,000 visitors over the three days of the event, which runs until Thursday (24).

Maurício Macedo, CEO of Fiera Milano Brasil, the event's organizer, opened the ceremony by highlighting the attractions and the three-day schedule. “We will have five auditoriums and more than 94 hours of content, including lectures and congresses. And among the scheduled attractions, we have the Technology and Innovation Space, featuring the presentation of 27 innovative products for the sector. The business matchmaking sessions, an initiative by Brazilian Safety and ApexBrasil with international buyers, are expected to hold more than 300 business meetings with Brazilian PPE and EPC manufacturers by the end of the event.”

The president of the National Association of the Safety and Occupational Protection Equipment Industry (ANIMASEG), Altair dos Santos, emphasized that this is the largest event in the Southern Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. “I highlight the importance of Fisp for ANIMASEG, and we are launching our sustainability campaign for the PPE sector,” he said.

The Selo ConsultaCA.com awards, aimed at companies committed to PPE consumers, will be held at the event. Promoted by SafetyTec's digital platform, the award recognizes manufacturers and importers that offer the best customer service and encourages good practices in the sector.

And in a 700-square-meter area of Fisp, the public will experience, in real time, details of footwear production at the Model Safety Factory, a project conceived by IBTeC (Brazilian Institute of Technology for Leather, Footwear, and Artifacts) in partnership with the company Marluvas, Professional Equipment. Meanwhile, SENAI-SP is showcasing one of its Mobile Schools for an immersive demonstration of its cutting-edge technology and innovation in the occupational safety sector.

Model Safety Factory demonstrates shoe production in real time

During Fisp and Fire Show, the Brazilian Leather, Footwear and Artifact Technology Institute (IBTeC) and Marluvas Professional Equipment are holding the fourth edition of the Model Safety Factory project, standing out as an interactive attraction. In a 700-square-meter space, the public will be able to follow the production of 600 pairs of safety and occupational shoes live, at 200 pairs per day.

The project brings together 50 partner companies, including suppliers of inputs, components, and machinery, focusing on innovation and industrial efficiency. According to Paulo Model, technical director of IBTeC, the initiative is a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs in the sector. “Our goal is to introduce new technologies that can be implemented in industrial plants, optimizing production and the safety of personal protective equipment (PPE),” he states.

Among the equipment presented, Garudan's machines, which specialize in sewing, cutting, and laser engraving, stand out. Maurício Oliveira, the company's industrial mechanic, emphasizes the machines“ differential: ”We are working with two of the four footwear models, and our equipment features a direct-drive motor, which eliminates the need for an auxiliary motor, making the process more agile and efficient."

Furthermore, Milton Mello, director of Formello Formas, reinforces the importance of lasts in footwear production. “Each shoe model requires a specific last, and we are using direct injection technologies, which guarantee greater precision and durability for the products,” Mello explains.

In all, four models of footwear aimed at industrial use are being produced, two of which are occupational models and two are safety models with a dual-density PU sole, a technology that offers greater resistance and comfort, especially in environments that require protection and durability. “We want to offer event visitors the chance to observe up close the practical application not only of materials, but also of processes, products, and machinery that guarantee quality and high productivity,” adds Paulo Model.

Efficiency of Respiratory Protective Equipment

On the first day of Fisp and Fire Show, the Technology and Innovation auditorium hosted a lecture on the “Efficiency of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE): Total Inward Leakage (TIL) Test.” Led by Reinaldo Morelli, Certified Occupational Hygienist and Technical Director at Faster, the presentation highlighted the challenges and solutions to ensure the effectiveness of RPE in protecting workers.

During the lecture, Morelli emphasized that one of the main obstacles to the high efficiency of RPEs lies in the diversity of occupational exposure situations. Different chemical agents, varying concentrations, and forms of dispersion make choosing respiratory equipment a complex process. “Each worker has their own particularities; human beings do not come in a single shape, for example, facial shape. Furthermore, some respiratory equipment can cause psychological problems, such as claustrophobia,” commented the speaker, who is also a member of the ABNT/CB-32 and ISO/TC 94/SC 15/WG6 technical committees.

Another relevant point was the importance of detailed knowledge about the work environment. According to Morelli, conducting a precise risk mapping and identifying and quantifying the existing threats is crucial to ensuring the effectiveness of PPE. “The first step to ensure the efficiency of PPE is to know exactly the risks to which workers are exposed,” he stated.

Morelli also addressed the Respiratory Protection Program (RPP), developed by Fundacentro. This program establishes the process for the selection, use, and maintenance of respirators in order to ensure adequate protection against both the hazard and for the user. He highlighted the relevance of regulations, such as NR 06 and Ordinance 672 of November 8, 2021, which guide companies to adopt clear procedures for the use of this equipment, promoting safety in the work environment.

Concluding his presentation, Reinaldo Morelli detailed how the Total Inward Leakage (TIL) test works, one of the main tools for evaluating the efficiency of respirators (EPRs). The TIL measures the amount of contaminants that manage to penetrate the respirator, checking both the seal and the efficiency of the filters. “The goal is to ensure that the respirator effectively reduces the user's exposure to contaminants,” he explained.

The test is performed under conditions controlled by the manufacturer to certify the equipment, and is a fundamental step to ensure that workers are properly protected in their daily activities.

SENAI mobile school opens its doors during Fire Show

Regulatory standards NR18, NR33, and NR35, which refer to safety practices at heights (above two meters) and in high or confined working spaces, go far beyond protocols for firefighters and construction workers. They are mandatory in various work environments, such as, for example, a factory plant. And when it is impossible for a company to send its employees to take the mandatory course approved by the MEC at one of SENAI's physical units, the institution itself created the Mobile Schools, which make it possible to bring these and other types of training to wherever is necessary – including pavilion 8 of São Paulo Expo, where it is available to Fire Show visitors.

It is a semi-trailer truck about 7 meters high, which includes a high platform with fences and, inside, confinement chambers with smoke simulating a fire, underground passages, stairs, trapdoors, a theoretical classroom, hooks for tying ropes, and all the equipment necessary for the training.

“These short-term courses meet specific and immediate demands of companies located in regions where the institution does not have a permanent school or where the local unit does not offer the necessary content, explains Camila Pimenta, director of SENAI-SP. Currently, there are 78 Mobile Schools, covering technological areas such as aeronautics, automation, food, automotive, among others.

At the Fire Show, which started this Tuesday (22) and runs until the 24th, Thales Guarezi, an occupational safety technician at SENAI, is available to give the complete tour, demonstrate the mobile unit's features, and answer visitors' questions.

High-temperature resistant clothing

Visitors walking through the aisles of Fisp and Fire Show will find the main innovations and new products in the high-temperature resistant clothing segment.

One of the companies specialized in this segment is Suprema Luvas, which brought its entire line of aluminized products to this edition of the event: shirts, pants, aprons, hoods, protectors, gloves, helmets… “Our main clients are steel mills, metallurgy plants, in other words, industries involved in high-temperature production,” highlights Nathália Rufino, Suprema’s commercial manager. The highlight goes to the aluminized gloves with an aramid palm, capable of withstanding up to 800º C in contact temperature and up to 1600 ºC of radiant heat (without contact).

Already Thermal protective clothing can be divided into two categories: short-duration fire protection – also called flash fire – and arc flash clothing, that is, PPE to protect against electrical discharges, which generate high temperatures and can cause fires.

“Think of someone working on an oil rig, an extraction field, a chemical plant. And, on the other hand, you have the risk of an electric arc. We at Dupont work in Brazil by supplying the raw material for the production of PPE that is essential for these professionals, which is Nomex Comfort fabric, focused on fire protection, and Nomex Essential Arc, more focused on electric arc,” highlights Eduardo Moreira, technical manager for Dupont's entire Nomex line in Latin America.

Another company specialized in the manufacture of personal protective equipment is JGB. Most of the company's product line exhibited at this 24th edition of Fisp is targeted at high temperatures. These are PPEs for firefighting, thermal risks, protection against metal splashes, radiant heat, protection of electricians against electric arc, and flash fire.

“The market in Brazil, and everyone, in fact, does not have specific PPE for women. This has never been an agenda for the market and we decided to raise this flag at Fisp and Fire Show by bringing PPE with specific sizing for women, pregnant women, and people with disabilities, maintaining all the technology and protection required by law, highlights Marlon Vacario, technical salesperson at JGB.

“Health and safety are non-negotiable,” says MPT prosecutor in lecture at Cobrasemt

Continuing the schedule of 25th Cobrasemt (Brazilian Congress of Safety and Occupational Medicine), which took place during FISP 2024 (International Security and Protection Exhibition), at 3:30 p.m. this Tuesday (22), Cirlene Luiza Zimmermann, from Rio Grande do Sul, a prosecutor for the Labor Public Prosecutor's Office (MPT), presented the panel “Defense of the Working Environment and Promotion of Workers” Health”.

The speaker lectured at length on the history of occupational safety in Brazil, which was a global benchmark for accidents in the 1970s, a bleak scenario that began to change with the 1988 Constitution—which, in addition to hygiene and safety, began to guarantee the professional's security—and achieved many advances with the National Health and Safety Policy of 2011.

Zimmerman explained how occupational safety inspections have been conducted in the country since 2006 by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), headquartered in Costa Rica, and mentioned several Brazilian institutions that work in favor of the occupational working environment (OWE) and occupational health and safety (OHS), such as Social Security, the SUS, the Reference Center for Occupational Health (Cerest), the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), as well as the Labor Public Prosecution Office. “Safe work in a healthy environment is a right from which we cannot step backward. Health and safety are non-negotiable,” says Zimmermann.

Technology and Innovation Space highlights 27 products

This year, Fisp and Fire Show are presenting the “Technology and Innovation Space” with the exhibition of 27 innovative products aimed at the safety and protection sector. This unprecedented space was created to provide an interactive experience for visitors who, in addition to being impacted by the new solutions, can already better organize their itinerary for visiting the brands' booths for more information.

Raul Casanova, executive director of Animaseg, pointed out that the idea for the space arose in 2022, but was redesigned to align with the fair's central theme. “We carried out some activities, but it wasn't exactly like this. Since the fair's theme became technology and innovation, we decided to expand the project, inviting companies with launches and innovations to present their products,” Casanova stated.

To attract visitors' attention, the space was strategically positioned right at the entrance of the fair (Pavilion 4), ensuring visibility and easy access. Among the products being exhibited, apparel, reflective fabrics, respiratory PPE, and safety-focused software stand out.

With this initiative, the event reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovations and technologies that meet market needs, providing an effective environment for the exchange of experiences among industry professionals.

Business round receives representatives from 10 countries

Business meetings also generate activity at Fisp. At the Brazilian Safety booth, the matchmaking session during the first day attracted buyers from more than 10 countries, who participated in over 50 meetings. Fadil Bodden, from the company Top Safety, located in the Dominican Republic, attended his third FISP this year, including the 2015 and 2022 editions. “What attracts me most to the event are products that are so innovative, which allow us to do good business and renew the Dominican market,” says Bodden.

The quality and variety of the products were also what attracted Murugasen Govender, from the South African company Jenrad Corporation, a Cape Town-based importer, to his first edition of Fisp. “It is a very pleasant surprise to realize that Brazil is so industrialized and produces cutting-edge goods. Without a doubt, this experience will generate good business for us,” said Marugasen, right after his ninth meeting in the matchmaking session.
